You have over processed your skin. Now it’s dry, red, irritated, flakey, breaking out, or possibly all of the above. What do you do now?

TAKE IT BACK TO BASICS!
•
What your skin needs now is hydration, and time for your skin barrier to repair and rebalance.

-What I recommend: in the AM skip using your cleanser, and only splash with warm water. (This is ONLY if you have cleansed properly the night before, I’m assuming here that you didn’t go to bed with full make-up!)
-In the AM use a moisturizer and SPF. In the PM you will double cleanse with a CREAM cleanser. Ditch the foaming cleanser while you are repairing your skin’s barrier, foaming cleansers can be drying. In the PM moisturize only after your cleanse. You CAN add a niacinamide serum to help repair your barrier, but it’s not necessary.
-Most importantly avoid your active ingredients like retinoids etc. You can reintroduce these slowly once your skin is back to normal.

OK so hear people talking about it, you see it all over social media, but what is this crazy thing called slugging?
•
Slugging is when you apply an occlusive moisturizer like Vaseline or Auquaphor or anything with petroleum jelly to your skin to help prevent transepidermal water loss. You basically wear it at night like a masque. Slugging is done at night because this is when your skin loses the most moisture. I also doubt you want to walk around during the day with Vaseline on your face! (Transepidermal water loss is the amount of water that passively evaporates through skin)
•
Here are important facts to know before you try it!
-It is NOT recommended for acne prone skin.
-It IS wonderful for dry skin.
-NO, it will not clog your pores. BUT it is very important to make sure that your face is very clean before applying the barrier! You don`t want to trap dirt underneath. I recommend a good thorough double cleanse before slugging.
-If you are using active ingredients such as retinols, it can enhance the potency of the active therefore causing irritation. Therefore, I would not slug on the nights you are using your actives.
•
Do you want to try it? Here is how it would go:
1. Double cleanse, 2. apply a moisturizing product like hyaluronic acid serum (optional), 3. apply a moisturizing cream, 4. then finish with a pea size amount of your petrolatum product. Last but not least, get your beauty sleep!

Slugging is great if you have extremely dry skin like me! Especially in the dry, colder months!

2. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it protects skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure. It also inhibits melanin production in the skin, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation and brown spots, even out skin tone, and enhance skin radiance.

Retinoids stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color. Additional benefits include fading age spots and softening rough patches of skin. They also reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. That’s a win win!

Sunscreen SHOULD be used daily! Vitamin C can be used daily. Retinoids should be used only night, and you need to start slow as it can cause skin irritation. Typically only 1-2x per week to start. Dry winter skin got you down?

As the weather changes so does our skin. Most of us experience drier skin in the winter. Your summer skincare regimen may not have enough hydration to get your skin through the winter months.

Here are some tips to keeping your skin hydrated during the winter!
•
Use a serum or toner (as pictured is my favorite) with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid helps your skin retain moisture. This improves not only hydration but plumpness as well.
•
Be sure you are using a good hydrating moisturizer, AM and PM. A moisturizer before bed is extremely important as your skin loses the majority of its hydration while you sleep.
•
Don’t use a cleanser that strips your skin if it’s natural oils. If you are using a cleanser with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, these active ingredients can dry out your skin. Does your skin feel dry and tight after cleansing? If so try switching to a gentler cleanser with no active ingredients.
